The Mission of God and Us

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends. Even in an imperfect world we have to admit that we have blessings to count and thankfulness to give to the God who is always with us. I hope you agree with that, but I understand if maybe you don’t. Maybe you think God has forsaken you. Maybe you think God has actually turned against you as an enemy. Maybe you think your life is too full of heartache to find anything to be thankful for. Maybe you think I’m a fake-smile-wearing spouter of the company line, but I promise you I’m not.

I understand heartache, and I’ve asked God plenty of hard questions. If you think I don’t know what I’m talking about, you don’t know me very well. I’d be lying if I said the last year or so has been easy for me. I’ve lost a cousin, an aunt, a grandmother, two incredibly close friends, and my mom to death just in the last eighteen months. And that’s not even close to all the things I’ve been working through, but I do still take time to tell God thank-you for whatever good things I can unearth in my days. We have to do that to maintain our faithfulness and our endurance, because a life of faith can be such a bumpy road.

If you ever wonder if it’s worth it—living a life of faith—I hope that today’s lesson and the ones to follow will help you see that it is. We’re going to be studying through a new series called “The Mission of God and Us,” and I believe it will help you connect to some truths that will help you find meaning and purpose in this life and that it will grow your hunger for the life still to come.  You’ll see; there is always a reason to be thankful.
