You Who Are Spiritual: Dennis Saucier, AMEN Ministry Director
It has been said that “the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” Social scientists have observed that there is no species on this planet that takes a longer period of time to raise its young than the human species. To bring a child into the world is by far the biggest investment of time, energy and money that anyone can make. But the payoff is phenomenal! This is what the Psalmist instructed in Psalm 127, “Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.” Parenting, and motherhood especially, is the only truly lasting legacy a person can make extending from generation to generation. It is not just bringing life into the world, a miracle by itself; but the experience of molding and shaping a child made in the image of God to achieve his or her fullest potential. This can come from all types of mothers, birth mothers, adopted mothers, dream mothers, step-mothers, godmothers, grandmothers, and any woman who will give of herself to guide a child. Her influence extends through all kinds of relationships to benefit society as a whole. It is no wonder that one of God’s Ten Commandments to His people is to honor your father and mother as a promise for a good and long life (Deuteronomy 5:16, Ephesians 6:1-3). As we observe Mother’s Day, we are celebrating the visible reality of unconditional love which is the definition of grace. Let’s be realistic, motherhood often experiences challenge, weariness, sacrifice and struggle all of which helps us to more clearly understand the nature of unconditional love. “These three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13
