Words Waves & Awakenings

Words, Waves, and Awakenings

Good morning, Church family.  May God be pleased with our worship today as we glorify him and encourage one another.  It is always good for us to be together in the Father’s presence.  Just don’t make the mistake of thinking that being in the Father’s presence means that we never have to endure a storm.  We are safe, and we can be at peace while the storm around us rages, but that’s not always easy, is it?  It’s hard to be calm when things around us are anything but calm.

I’m reminded of Jesus famous teaching in Matthew 7:24-27, where he compares those who hear his words and obey them with foolish people who hear but disregard Jesus.  He says the wise man “built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”  The foolish man, however, “built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

I know what kind of person I want to be.  Do you?  It’s something to think about.

It all hinges on who we think Jesus is and if we care about ourselves.  We’ll see in today’s sermon that Mark continues to make the point that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.  In today’s text (Mark 4:21-41), Mark gives evidence of this claim by sharing more of Jesus’ teachings about the kingdom of God and by showing us another facet of Jesus’ power and authority that he hadn’t yet revealed.  It’s another impressive story from the ministry of Jesus, but don’t let it just be a story.  Understand that these things should become part of our foundational beliefs, which help strengthen our stance and prepare us for the storms that come.
