Table Manners, Part 1

Table Manners, Part 1

In Galatians 2:11-21, we witness one of the most uncomfortable moments in Scripture: Paul publicly confronting Peter. What could warrant such a dramatic scene?

The church in Antioch was a beautiful picture of unity. Jews and Gentiles breaking bread together, living out the gospel’s promise that old divisions were abolished in Christ. Peter initially embraced this new reality, eating freely with Gentile believers. But when representatives from Jerusalem arrived, fear took over. Peter withdrew, separating himself from the Gentiles, and even Barnabas followed his lead.

Paul saw what was at stake. When you have two tables, you don’t have the Lord’s Table. Peter’s actions were preaching a false gospel, one that added ethnic credentials to faith in Jesus Christ.

Paul’s confrontation was an act of love: “A person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ” (v. 16). The gospel isn’t something we construct to maintain comfort or reputation; it’s God’s truth that demands we die to our false securities and discover Christ living in us.

We face the same temptation today. We create our own boundary markers (education, politics, culture, tradition) that determine who’s really “in.” But faith in Jesus is the only credential that matters. What table are you refusing to sit at? Who have you drawn back from out of fear? The adventure of following Jesus requires us to value truth over reputation and to choose costly grace over cheap acceptance.

One Lord. One faith. One table.

Dinner Table Conversations:

Adult & Teen Table Talk:

  • Paul describes Peter’s withdrawal as being motivated by fear; “he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.” What are some modern “circumcision groups” whose opinions we fear?
  • How does that fear shape the way we relate to others in the church or community?

Little Learners’ Table Talk:

  • Jesus wants all His friends to sit at the same table together and no one left out! Who is someone at school or in your neighborhood that you could invite to play or share a snack with this week?
