Is Wisdom Better than Folly?

We live in a world that is drowning in advice. We have podcasts, TED Talks, self-help books, and YouTube mentors who promise to make us wiser, stronger, and more successful. Yet for all access to “wisdom,” people are more anxious, exhausted, and uncertain than ever.

The writer of Ecclesiastes understood that tension long before the internet. In chapters 7 and 8, he admits that wisdom really does help us. That it teaches us patience, honesty, and humility. It helps us face reality instead of pretending life is always easy. But he also confesses that even wisdom has limits. It can’t explain why bad things happen to good people. It can’t give us control over a world that often feels unfair.

Ecclesiastes reminds us that wisdom is a guide, not a god. It helps us live well, but it cannot give our lives meaning. Only God can do that. The truly wise person learns to hold their plans open-handed before Him—to seek understanding but not demand answers.

When life doesn’t make sense, when your best efforts still fall short, remember that wisdom can guide your steps but faith will steady your heart. As the writer concludes, “No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun… but it will go better with those who fear God” (Ecclesiastes 8:17, 12).
