What does it look like when God goes after His people? This Sunday, we continue our journey through Exodus with a passage that is tender, startling, and a little strange. In Exodus 4:19-31, Moses turns back toward Egypt carrying a staff, a family, and an enormous calling. Along the way, God calls Israel by a name that changes everything: “my firstborn son.”

Yet, the road home is not smooth. Why would the God who has just called Moses seem to turn against him? In one of the most puzzling scenes in the Old Testament, even Moses, a hero of heroes, is confronted with his own need for grace. If Moses struggles to live as a faithful child of God, what hope is there for the rest of us? Join us as we discover a Father whose love does not quit, a people who often fall short, and a Son who makes a way for us to be welcomed fully into the family of God. It is a story of discipline and delight, and it points straight to Jesus.

Dinner Table Conversations:

Adult & Teen Table Talk:

  • In Exodus 4:22, God calls Israel his “firstborn son” before the people have done anything to earn it. How does that shape the way you think about identity and belonging in God’s family?
  • This passage holds together the privileges and the responsibilities of being God’s child. Where do you feel that tension in your own life, and how does Jesus, the faithful Son, speak into it?

Little Learners’ Table Talk:

  • Moses and the people of Israel were called God’s children. What does it mean that God is like a Father who never gives up on us?
