Here I Am

This Sunday, we celebrate Promotion Sunday, watching our young people move to the next level in their faith journey. But the story of young Samuel reminds us that growing up in God’s house isn’t just about advancing grades—it’s about learning to recognize when God calls our name.

Samuel couldn’t sleep that night in the tabernacle. Three times he heard his name and ran to old Eli, thinking the priest had called him. But it wasn’t Eli’s voice—it was God’s. When Eli finally realized what was happening, he gave Samuel the perfect instruction: “If someone calls again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.'”

What beautiful wisdom from a mentor who could no longer hear God’s voice himself but could still teach someone else how to listen.

God has this habit of showing up in ordinary moments—not with thunder and lightning, but as naturally as a parent calling a child’s name. While the religious leaders had grown comfortable with silence, God found a boy who was still paying attention.

The same God who called Samuel still calls people by name today. He’s calling children to discover their gifts, teenagers to step into leadership, and adults to new seasons of service. The question isn’t whether God is speaking—it’s whether we’re listening.

Spiritual maturity isn’t about how much we know or how long we’ve been coming to church. It’s about availability. It’s about maintaining that childlike readiness to jump up when our name is called and say, “Here I am!”

May we all be people who sleep lightly, listen carefully, and respond quickly when God calls our name.

Dinner Table Conversations:

Adult & Teen Table Talk:

  • Samuel’s response was simply “Speak, your servant is listening”—not negotiating or debating with God. Why is this posture of listening so challenging for us? What would it look like to cultivate this attitude in your daily life?
  • Samuel grew up in God’s house but still had to learn to recognize God’s voice. What’s the difference between religious familiarity and genuine spiritual sensitivity? How do we avoid spiritual complacency?

Little Learners’ Table Talk:

  • Samuel was promoted to be God’s special messenger. Today we celebrated kids getting promoted to new classes! What are you most excited about in your new class or group?
