Living like We’re Dying

Living like We’re Dying

Living Like We’re Dying – November 7, 2021 – Bible class begins @ 1:46:19

I was around eight years old when my grandma died.  That was the first time I’d seen death up close.  It was the first time that old serpent bit me.  I felt its sting, and it left a scar that I haven’t forgotten.

Death is one of those topics that becomes an odd source of dispute among Christians.  Some of us focus on its status as enemy #1 (1 Corinthians 15:26) while others highlight the blessing that comes for believers when we die (Philippians 1:21).  Both of these are true at the same time because of the resurrection of Jesus.

We’re not going to focus on this debate in today’s sermon; rather, we’re going to wrestle with the reality that all of us will die and one day be judged by the Lord (Hebrews 9:27).  Since that’s true, what kind of life should we live?  How should we spend our days?  How can we set our priorities so that we live with the end in view?

Rest assured, this isn’t intended to be a morbid or depressing exercise.  We all have enough challenges and stressors to work through outside of these walls.  My hope and prayer is that by reminding ourselves of what’s to come we will be better at living in ways that hunger for the righteousness of God. And when we do that, we will consistently find ways to bless the people around us, which should lead us into the joy and peace that Scripture tells us is available to us in Christ.

As is always the case, if something you hear today pricks your heart or challenges your previous beliefs and you want to talk more about it, please let me know.  If you’re afraid that you might not be ready for the judgment that awaits us all, let’s talk about it soon so we can all focus on living like we’re dying.
