Getting Ready to Graduate
It’s here again! This is the time each year that brings a wonderfully nostalgic mix of emotions when we honor this year’s high school graduates. Tonight at 5:00 is Baccalaureate, and we’re celebrating La’Joy Edwards, Nathan Johnson, Makayla Nash, and James Szemreylo. You are all invited, because church is family, and family comes together at times like these. This isn’t just for the youth group or the elders or the deacons; it’s for all of us who together make up the body of Christ.
Did you catch that? We have a chance to come back tonight and celebrate four good seniors who’ve spent much of their young lives as part of this church and youth group. This is a chance to practice what we preach and be the church—to be the family of God that Jesus calls us to be in a way that honors and encourages our young people and their families.
If we only do the things that meet our needs, we’re no different than those who don’t know Jesus. One thing I love about this church is that we have many people with servants’ hearts, but this remains an area of growth for us. We should all be servants, because we only have one Master, and even he came “not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).
And that’s what we’re talking about in this morning’s sermon as we continue our way through the Gospel of Mark. It’s fitting that this text (Mark 10:32-45) arrived just in time for Baccalaureate. Our graduates need to hear it as they prepare for their next steps in life, and so do all of us who constantly are trying to follow Jesus.
