Beyond the Screen: Cultivating a Christ-Centered Worldview

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (the best of all Star Wars movies) sets the stage for the original trilogy. In a far, far away galaxy ruled by the evil Empire, a group of rebels are willing to risk their lives to ensure a message is spread far and wide that there is another way of life. Their message is, of course, one of hope, but it is also one that says the galaxy needs to resist the message of Empire, that there is a better way and future. In many ways, this is the task of Christians today. We are to spread the good news of Jesus Christ and proclaim that there is another, better way to live. The gospel is to be the message that shapes our lives and how we think, not the message of Satan or any of the empires that have come and gone, exist today or will rise in the future. In Romans 12:2, Paul says to “not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.” In essence, Paul is saying that we need to resist the message of the predominant culture around us and instead be transformed by Jesus Christ. The first-century Christians weren’t supposed to think or behave like any other Roman citizen but were to be “ambassadors for Christ” (2 Cor. 5:20). In this election season, we need to be adamant that we are not being conformed to the political ideologies of our nation’s parties, leaders, or news networks. Rather, as we continually confess Jesus as Lord and create practices that remind us of our devotion to Him, we will be transformed into His image.
