A Relationship with God
Today I would like to extend our thoughts from last week about the importance of the journey with God through our study of His word. In time, I hope you see that God’s intention is much greater than just imparting knowledge to us. Contrary to the common catchphrase associated with Sgt. Joe Friday, God intends for us to discover much more than “just the facts.” Instead, we have the opportunity to build a unique relationship with our heavenly Father.
This relationship is unique because it is unlike any other relationship that we experience. I cannot sit down with my morning coffee while engaging in profound, yet pleasant, back-and-forth dialogue with Him. We will never enjoy a Red Sox game together nor partner in a round of golf.
However, this relationship still includes characteristics inherent in the definition of relationship. Successful relationships are often built on trust and partnership. There should be a mutual benefit to each partner as well. We likely understand the benefits we receive from God, but have you ever noticed the benefits God receives from us? First, it is clear that God desires this relationship. In the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15.3-7, Jesus highlights the JOY in heaven over one sinner who returns back to God. Second, we know that God has chosen to use us as a means to help those in need, do good to others, and teach the message of His Son. There are clear benefits to God that result from the full measure of our relationship to Him.
As a parent I recently had a teaching moment with one of my children. My daughter was given a choice to participate in multiple activities. While talking with her, it seemed that the sole reason for her chosen activity was the activity itself. In other words, the activity was more important than the participants to her. I hope she eventually learns that the people, and consequently the relationships, are more important than the activity.
Do we understand that idea? Do we understand that our Bible study time is one way to foster and experience a relationship with our Father? It is the way that we come to fully know Him. Consider the following words of Jesus from Matthew 23.37. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered our children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!” From these words, I see the desire God has for His people – despite our inability to honor Him as our Creator. I see the amazing patience of God as He waited for His people to change. I see that God wants nothing more than to wrap up His children and protect them.
We accompany God through our daily interaction with His word and meditation on Him. I hope you have been blessed to know someone who makes any activity enjoyable. Regardless of the activity, you know that the time will be worthwhile just because you are with this person. Our Bible study should be similar. As opposed to a task to be completed, it should be anticipated because of the companionship involved. Take some time today and spend it with your heavenly Father. I know that is what He wants.
