Word Made Flesh

When we think of Christ’s birth, we often picture a manger, shepherds, angels, and a newborn child wrapped in cloths. John 1 invites us to step back and see it from a much wider, deeper angle. Before there was a stable in Bethlehem, before there was Mary and Joseph, the Word already was.

John calls Jesus “the Word” to remind us that God is not silent or distant. God has spoken. Through the Word, all things were made; through the Word, light shines into darkness. Celebrating the incarnation is not simply about a baby being born, but about God stepping into the darkness of our broken world with life, truth, and light.

John also tells us that “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” God did not send instructions from heaven; instead, He came himself. He took on our humanity, our limitations, and our vulnerability. The manger points to a God who chooses closeness over comfort, presence over power.

This passage also speaks of grace: “grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” This is the announcement that God’s grace has arrived, not as an abstract idea, but as a person. Jesus reveals who God truly is: full of grace, faithful, and loving.

As we celebrate the incarnation, John 1 reminds us that the story is bigger than sentiment and tradition. Instead, it is the breathtaking truth that the eternal God became flesh so that we might see His glory and receive life in His name.
