WHO ARE WE IN THE WORLD?
Second and third-generation followers of Jesus faced an identity crisis. They faced the question, “Who are we in the world?” What resulted were the writings of the New Testament.
“The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1).
Jesus broke through and halted the devil’s work as revealed through his power over demons, disease, and death. His re-creative actions ushered in a life that thrives in both the present world and in eternity. He brought good news to the world as the Messiah (King), the Son of God. He united with humanity in flesh, joined them in penitent baptism, and was anointed by the Holy Spirit.
Jesus invited followers to experience the new anointed life. However, this life was nothing like what they could ever imagine because it had nothing to do with nationalistic or personal glory. It was a life shaped by baptism (submission), wilderness (trial), cross (sacrifice), and mission (service). It’s a life of giving up rather than hanging on, of being last rather than first, of welcoming the least rather than the greatest, and of being a servant rather than being served.
Today’s sermon will draw from Jesus’ journey toward Jerusalem in Mark 10:32-52. The narrative provides two statements that speak to the question, “Who are we in the world?”
“WE WANT YOU TO DO US A FAVOR?”
“WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO FOR YOU?”
