What about Divorce?

What about Divorce?

What about Divorce? Part 2

The Apostle Paul taught in Romans 3:23-24 that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus….” Every time we study together about sin—especially the sins that are out in the open—we should remind ourselves that God alone is righteous, and God alone has the authority to pronounce judgment.  That should keep us humble when we discuss difficult topics like we’re doing this morning.

Last week we read Mark 10:1-12 and talked about Jesus’ shocking teaching about divorce and remarriage.  We know it shocked Jesus’ disciples because of their response to the same teaching recorded in Matthew 19:3-12.  We’re going to look at that passage today along with relevant teachings in Matthew 5:27-32 and 1 Corinthians 7:10-16.  There won’t be time today to consider every facet of these passages and their applications, but I hope we can at least see the broad outline of the sort of faithfulness God calls us to exhibit in our marriages.

Please remember that you and I should focus first and most thoroughly on how these passages apply to ourselves rather than judging our neighbors.  We also, because Jesus teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves, should be praying regularly for those who might be struggling in their relationships.  It’s appropriate to reach out and encourage other couples.  It’s helpful to get together not only to share a meal but to pray with one another.  It’s not that we want to pry or meddle in things that aren’t our business, but we do want to available for one another knowing that life can be hard to navigate alone.  If there’s anything I or the elders can do, please let us know.  We’re always available to listen, to pray, and to remind you that you are loved and needed as part of God’s family at Manchester.
