The Good News of Rest
Last summer as we studied the Ten Commandments here at Manchester, we spent one Sunday talking about the principal of sabbath rest. You might remember that we saw how God’s command for ancient Israel to practice a day of rest each week was intended to bless them, and God connected it to his own example of resting at the conclusion of his creation of the world. Even hard-working, gifted people like you need to rest.
I don’t know if you’ve been better at including some purposeful rest in your lives since that lesson a year ago, but I’ve tried to be. That doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve worked less; it could mean that we’ve worked—and rested—with greater purpose. Hopefully we’ve rested in ways that enable us to refill our tanks and resharpen our saws. I’m confident that Jesus lived in ways that were fully intentional and that kept him spiritually sharp at all times.
“But how do we do that?” you might be wondering. I wish I knew, but often I don’t. There are times when I still run out of gas before I’ve remembered to pause long enough to refill the tank. But that’s better than sitting still so long that the gas goes bad and you damage your engine. We want to avoid both of those problems, right? I think we can, and I think we find good direction from Jesus’ teachings and example. We’ll explore this further in the lesson as we explore the Good News of Rest.
