The Good News of Identity

The Good News of Identity

Greetings, church!  I’m writing this on Wednesday afternoon from the rustic setting of Gander Brook Christian Camp in Raymond, Maine, where I’m teaching bible to campers this week and next.  I’ll make a trip back to Manchester this weekend, so I hope to see you Sunday morning.  If all goes as planned, we’ll focus our sermon time together on The Good News of Identity in Christ.

The theme of camp this summer is the “Image of God” also known by its Latin form as the imago dei.  It’s been a blessing already this week to teach (and learn from) fifteen- and sixteen-year-old campers as we talk about what it means to be created in God’s image and live that out in our daily lives.  Teenagers are such prime targets of Satan as he works to deceive and manipulate them with all the sparkle and sizzle of the world, and the place he sets up camp is the place within them—and us—that tries to sort out exactly who they/we are.

Think about this question for a minute: Do you really know who you are?  I don’t mean just your name or even your genealogy.  I’m not talking about what you do for a living or what titles you hold at work.  This isn’t about your place in your community or the degrees you earned.  At your core, as God created you, who are you? What is your identity?

Your answer to that question can make all the difference between a life lived in peace and contentment or a life lived in uncertainty and anxiety.  I pray that we can make sense of this together during our sermon time Sunday morning.  I’m looking forward to it.

Bible class is recorded here as well, skip to 1:00:24 to view that!

God bless,

Patrick Barber
