The Church in Action

There’s a statement the Apostle Peter made when preaching to the household of a man named Cornelius (Acts 10) that I’ve always loved.  It says in v.38 that Jesus “went about doing good…”  What a simple way to summarize the ministry of the Lord.  He went about doing good.  That should be a basic litmus test for the ministries we coordinate as the Lord’s church: do they do good?  Do they help people in ways that point them to the Father?  If not, we’re off mission.

In today’s lesson, The Church in Action, I hope to talk about some of the good works that are ongoing here at Manchester. These are a sampling of some things that we do together for God’s glory.  Some are old, and some are new, but they are all intended to reflect the love we see in the life of Christ.  While today is not a ministry recruitment lesson, per se, it is an opportunity for you to think about what we’re doing as a body and how you might fit into some of that work.  God expects all of us to do our part, and he provides all sorts of opportunities for us.  I am certain that there is good work for YOU to do as part of the church here.  If you need help figuring out how to do that, let me know, and I’ll give you a hand.

This also gives us a chance to think about gaps we might have in our ministry structure.  Are there things Jesus was concerned about that we aren’t doing?  Should we be doing those things?  Can we be doing those things?  I don’t think we can do everything that could be done, but we should be willing to look around and evaluate if we’re really doing all we can for God or not.  These are things that require prayer and wisdom and discernment, and hopefully we’ll take time for that today, too.
