The Bread of Life

The Bread of Life

As we begin 2025, many are seeking new beginnings in their faith journey, or a desire to rediscover faith, and are asking fundamental questions about Jesus. What better way to learn about Jesus than from Jesus himself. We’ll do so by diving into the seven “I am” accounts in the Gospel of John. This week’s message explores a powerful encounter from John 6, where Jesus declares “I am the bread of life.” The story begins after Jesus miraculously fed 5,000 people. When the crowd tracked Him down the next day, Jesus revealed their true motives – they wanted more physical bread rather than spiritual nourishment. They were more concerned about having full bellies than have something everlasting. This led to a fundamental teaching about faith and eternal life. Jesus challenged their understanding by comparing Himself to the manna their ancestors ate in the wilderness. While that bread sustained physical life temporarily, Jesus offered something greater – spiritual bread that leads to eternal life. He declared, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever.” This declaration points to deeper truths we celebrate in communion. When we take the bread and cup, we’re not just remembering a historical event – we’re expressing our complete dependence on Christ for spiritual life. Just as we need physical food for sustenance, we need Jesus for our spiritual nourishment and eternal life. Are you feeling spiritually hungry today? Jesus offers himself as the bread of life – the only one who can truly satisfy our deepest longings. Through faith in Him, we can experience new life and eternal satisfaction.
