New Wine and Old Wineskins
Jesus often challenged the religious leaders of Israel for their hypocrisy.
They were guilty of distorting the law, adding burdens on others that were of their own making, and neglecting the more important matters of the law – justice, mercy and faithfulness. On one occasion He was confronted with the question of fasting. The disciples of John the Baptist and the Pharisees fasted. Jesus’ disciples did not. They asked Him why. Jesus answered them, as He often did, with a parable.
This morning we will spend time exploring the message of that parable. I believe that it is every bit as important for us today as it was 2,000 years ago. As we continue to deepen our understanding of what true discipleship looks like, we must recognize that when we accept Christ as Lord we don’t just add Him into our old way of life. Instead, we allow ourselves to be transformed into His likeness.
The lesson, New Wine and Old Wineskins is taken from the book of Luke.
