How Should We Live in a World of Uncertainty?

We work hard to make life predictable. We plan, invest, and prepare, hoping that if we do everything right, everything will go right. But Ecclesiastes 9-10 reminds us that life doesn’t always play by the rules.

The author says, “The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong… but time and chance happen to them all” (Eccl. 9:11). No one escapes life’s unpredictability. The doctor calls. The job changes. The plan collapses. And yet, instead of despair, Ecclesiastes offers wisdom. You can’t control life, but you can choose how to live it.

When we release our grip on control, we discover freedom. We’re free to enjoy simple gifts, such as a meal, laughter, rest, and friendship, as good gifts from God. We’re free to act faithfully without knowing how it will all turn out.

Wisdom doesn’t eliminate risk. It gives courage to live well in uncertainty. Faith doesn’t guarantee outcomes; it teaches us to trust the One who holds them.

This week let’s name something we can’t control and surrender it to God. Let’s enjoy one small gift of grace He’s given us today. As Ecclesiastes says, “Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might” (Eccl. 9:10). You can’t predict tomorrow but you can live wisely, joyfully, and faithfully today.
