Dedicated to the Lord
Welcome, everyone, to worship this morning. May the Lord God be pleased with what he sees and hears from us as we praise him and encourage one another. Worship is more than singing and praying and listening to a sermon. It’s even more than thinking about the death and resurrection of Jesus, which we do every week when we commune around the Lord’s Supper. Worship time should also involve the weekly discipline of recommitting ourselves to the covenant of God and rededicating ourselves to a life that prioritizes serving in his mission.
This morning, I hope to lead us through a time of reflection that helps us learn from the powerful example of a woman named Hannah, and I hope our learning leads us to rededicate ourselves to the Lord’s service in significant ways.
Hannah’s true story is recorded in the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, which is named after her son. We’ll look together at parts of the first two chapters of that book. There we’ll find her story of strength, courage, perseverance, and faith. It motivates me to want to be more like her, and I hope you’ll find something of value there, too.
If you do, your tomorrow will look different than today.
Here’s what I mean by that: God gives us access to his word and his wisdom so that we will be a changed people. The Holy Spirit is working in his church to make us holy vessels for the Lord’s service. But he will not force us in ways that go against our will. Instead, God will nurture and gently guide us into his righteousness, which is the only true path to blessing in this life. So be thinking about how the things we discuss today can change your life, because with God’s help and your cooperation, they will.
