Covenant Renewal In Communion

Good morning and welcome to worship! I’ve been looking forward to today’s worship for quite some time. This is one of those special Sundays when we tie everything we do in worship to what we call the Lord’s Supper or Communion.  We continue to follow what we believe was the practice of the first-century Christians who gathered every Sunday morning to worship God and remember the death and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah. That’s why we “take communion” every Sunday, but it’s not just based on church tradition. We also do it to remember, to celebrate, and—this morning—to renew our covenant with the risen Lord. This is a very special experience for all of us who have entered into a covenant with God in our baptism, and I pray that you will leave having been refreshed, cleansed, and strengthened for whatever lies ahead.

God bless,

Patrick Barber

Digging Deeper:

  1. What is a covenant, and why did God create one to help define his relationship with us?
  2. Why did Joshua tell Israel that they could not keep the covenant? (see Josh. 24)
  3. In what ways is the new covenant through Jesus different than the old covenant given through Moses?  (see Hebrews 10:15-18)
  4. How can the taking of communion help us renew our covenant vows with God each week?
