The Good News of Access to God

One of the deepest pains we can experience as people God created for community is to feel unwanted, excluded, and unheard.  Everyone needs friendship.  Everyone needs to be listened to.

I sometimes think about the people Jesus spent so much time with who were ignored and unloved by their neighbors.  It must have been an incredible feeling for them to have that time with the Lord, whether they understood who he was or not.  Jesus would have been an excellent listener.  We can know this for sure, because Jesus perfectly embodied the grace and truth of God, and there is no better listener than God.

We might think that God either doesn’t have time to hear us, isn’t interested in our little lives, or simply refuses to listen to us because of our sin.  None of that, however, is true.  God has time for us all.  God is patient and merciful and compassionate toward us all.  And God is especially attentive to those who are spiritually sick and need the attention of the Great Physician.  Let’s not take this blessing for granted.

I’m so thankful that God never shuts us out, never turns his back on those who love him, and always lets us draw near to his throne of grace.  This morning, we’ll talk more about this blessing of having access to our God, and we’ll look at an inspired resource that can help us share things with God we might have thought he could never hear.  And then it’s up to us to not waste that gift, this is the good news of access to God.

Patrick Barber

James 4:8: Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter into mourning and your joy into despair. Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.
