1 Peter Week 1

1 Peter Week 1

Over the next five weeks, we’re going to be spending time in the letter of 1 Peter. I have always been drawn to this particular New Testament book because of how Peter begins his address: “To God’s elect, strangers in the world.” At its core, 1 Peter tackles significant themes that remain relevant across the centuries. It explores the call to holiness and the believer’s role as a living testimony amidst a hostile world. It delves into the theme of suffering, assuring readers that their trials have purpose and are opportunities for growth and refinement. We will explore this letter a chapter at a time over the coming weeks. It will not be hard for us modern-day Christians to empathize with the early Church that Peter is addressing. We, too, live in a culture that is not in full alignment with the values of the kingdom of God. Due to this, it only makes sense that we will face opposition as we strive to be faithful servants. But it is important that we have the proper foundation so that we are not continually flustered and confused by any obstacles we face. The primary theme of this week’s study is the celebration of our new hope in Jesus and the call to be holy in light of this joyful promise. The time will come for talking about responding to suffering and the action steps we can take for the kingdom of God. But first, we must bask in the new hope we have been given through Christ and accept the claim that it makes on our life.
