As Denzel Washington so eloquently puts it, ‘Small minds discuss gossip, good minds discuss events and great minds discuss ideas.’ Let’s strive to cultivate great minds that focus on uplifting ideas and conversations that bring people together. By doing so, we can create a more positive and supportive community.
As God instructs us, let’s reject gossip and instead engage in discussions that build others up and promote love and kindness. Let’s aim to develop hearts that are after God’s own heart, and may we be inspired by His love for us to spread love and positivity to those around us.
God tells us he hates gossip. Look at what He includes it with… “They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,” Romans 1:29-30 ESV Knowing this, why do we engage in it so easily? Gossip is not just of “small minds” it is an evil practice, no good can come from it, and it has no place in the heart of one who loves God.
How do we fight the urge to gossip? We step over the smallness and embrace building others up. “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29
Small minds are missing a heart for God and are incapable of building others up. So…” We fight with weapons that are different from those the world uses. Our weapons have power from God that can destroy the enemy’s strong places. We destroy people’s arguments, and every proud thing that raises itself against the knowledge of God. We capture every thought and make it give up and obey Christ.” 2 Cor. 10:4-5 NCV
If good minds discuss events, believers are compelled to discuss the most significant event of all time, the resurrection of Christ. No other event compares with it.
“God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.” Romans 5:8-11 NLT
We are not an afterthought, we are embedded in the mighty heart of an Almighty God. There is no better idea than that of a loving Creator redeeming His creation.
“No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God—his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began. But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord. That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” 1 Cor. 2:7-9
May we reject the small mind, practice the good mind, and embrace the great mind that develops the heart after God’s own. The heart that talks about His love for us, the love that pursues us, the love that died for us, the love that comforts us, and the love that will forever reunite us with Him.
Discuss the great idea of God with someone today.
